Dr Thelma Bessell Browne Scholarship Undergraduate Education

The Dr Thelma Bessell-Brown Scholarship was established in honour of Dr Leo Leriche's late wife Dr Thelma Bessell-Browne. Thelma was a teacher who dedicated her whole life to education, with a strong focus on reading and literacy in particular. The Dr Thelma Bessell-Browne Scholarship will be awarded to a student studying 4th Year in an Undergraduate Education degree who demonstrates a passion for education and a specific interest in reading and literacy. The scholarship offers a one-off payment of $1,600.

Eligibility guidelines

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:

be an Australian citizen;
be a current student;
have completed 3 years/360 credit points of one of the following courses: 
Bachelor of Education (Primary) Y41; or
Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies) Y42.
be enrolled /enrolling into your 4th year units in semester 1;
be studying full time and on-campus;
have maintained an academic status of good standing at the end of each semester (as defined in the ECU handbook); and
be able to provide evidence of their interest in reading and literacy

Selection criteria

Selection will be based on:

your Academic Merit;
evidence you provide of reading and literacy activities/studies undertaken outside of your core/compulsory units; and
the content of your statement (see How to apply below).

How to apply

Application is made via the ECU Online Scholarship Application Portal.

Access to the Portal is available between application opening and closing dates.

You will need to supply a written statement of approx. 500 words demonstrating your passion for education and commitment to the effective teaching of reading and literacy.

In particular you should provide information describing the relevant activities/studies you have undertaken outside  of your core/compulsory units, in order to support your knowledge and understanding of effective literacy teaching.
