Award Description

The University of Birmingham is pleased to be able to offer one scholarship for an undergraduate student who has sought refuge in the UK. The award supports an undergraduate student with tuition fee and living cost support for a 3 year undergraduate programme.

Article 26 Scholarship For Any Undergraduate

Value of Award

The award is paid as a tuition fee waiver for any standard 3 year undergraduate programme.  In addition, a living cost award of £10,000 is available, split between a University-owned accommodation fee waiver and a monthly stipend payment for each year of study.

Eligibility Criteria

If you wish to be considered for the award you must meet the following conditions at the point your application for the scholarship is made:

• You are applying to study at the University of Birmingham for the first time as an undergraduate
• You must have made the University of Birmingham’s offer your first choice through UCAS
• You must apply directly to the University using the Article 26 application form
• You must have submitted, or be a dependant* of someone who has submitted, an asylum application before you applied to the University through UCAS and you must be able to demonstrate that you applied for asylum on arrival in the UK and before an application to study was made to the University, OR you must be someone or a dependant* of someone who has been granted discretionary leave

*Spouses/ civil partners must have been the spouse/ civil partner on the date which the asylum application was made. Children/step-children must have been aged under 18 on the date on which the asylum application was made.

• You must provide documentation you have received from the Home Office in relation to your asylum or human rights claim with your Scholarship Award application
• You must complete the University Authorisation form permitting the University to contact the Home Office about your immigration case
• You must attend or have attended a school, college, community or voluntary group in the UK who will provide a reference for your application answering all the questions on the Article 26 application form
• You must be studying at undergraduate degree level for the first time and will be entering the first year of the programme
• You must demonstrate that you are unable to access mainstream UK student funding due to you residency status
• You must hold a current offer from the University of Birmingham to start year one of a full time undergraduate course  
• If you receive notification that you are liable to be detained, you will no longer be eligible for the scholarship.  If your status changes throughout the application process or at any point prior to or during your studies, you must notify the University immediately

How to Apply

You can make an application using the Article 26 application form.

The selection process is as follows:

• Your application will first be considered by the International Students Advisory Service who will confirm to the panel considering your application if your immigration status meets the criteria outlined here. The University will contact the Home Office to verify your immigration status in the UK
• If your application is taken forward, we will invite you for an interview to clarify the information you have provided in your application and discuss any support needs you might have
• All awards are discretionary and there is no appeal against a decision not to award a scholarship
• If at any point during the application process or after you start your studies, we are informed by the Home Office that you should not be studying at the University, you will no longer be eligible for the award.  We will deem you withdrawn and you will be expected to leave your studies immediately.

Please note that this is a competitive process and only one applicant will be successful.
