International Council of Ophthalmology ICO Fellowships Program

International Council of Ophthalmology invites applications from promising young ophthalmologists of developing countries for different fellowships under ICO Fellowship Program 2017. The key objective of the program is to improve practical skills and broaden perspectives of Ophthalmology among these professionals.
ICO Fellowships Program 2018 - Eligibility

To be eligible for ICO three-month Fellowships, ICO three-month Fellowships for Diagnosis and Therapy of Retinoblastoma, ICO three-month Fellowship in Pathology, Oncology and Microbiology & ICO-ECF six-month Fellowships for Diagnosis and Therapy of Retinoblastoma, a candidate must -
  • Complete his/her Residency training before applying for the fellowship.
  • Have successfully passed a Specialist exam in ophthalmology.
  • Be under 40 years of age at the time of applying.
  • Return to home country after the training, resume previous positions, and apply the knowledge gained during the fellowship.
  • Be reasonably fluent in the language of the fellowship training center.
To be eligible for ICO Retina Research Foundation Helmerich Fellowships and Fred Hollows Fellowships (one year), a candidate must -
  • Be from a developing country.
  • Be under 40 years of age at the time of applying.
  • Be a graduate of an ophthalmology residency training program.
  • Be recommended by the ophthalmology head of a teaching institution or public service hospital in a developing country.
  • Be accepted for ophthalmology sub specialty fellowship, one year in duration, at an advanced ophthalmology training center.
  • Be reasonably fluent in the language of the fellowship training center.
  • Be committed to returning to a position at a teaching institution or public service hospital in the fellow's home country.
Note: Applicants from countries with ophthalmologic societies that are Members of the ICO will receive special consideration. ICO also considers those candidates who have passed one or more ICO exams.

To apply for the fellowship program, an applicant needs to follow the below-given steps -

Step 1: Create an account by clicking here.
Step 2: Select a fellowship
Step 3: Complete eligibility check
Step 4: ICO will review candidates' eligibility and notify them about their final decision
Step 5: Apply to host training center (Apply for one note at a time)
Step 6: Review of host application
Step 7: Once completed with all formalities and finally submit the fellowship application.

Award details
  • ICO three-month Fellowships - A total of 60 fellowships will be awarded of up to US $6000 to cover travel and living expenses for three months.
  • ICO three-month Fellowships for Diagnosis and Therapy of Retinoblastoma - An amount of up to US $ 6,000 will be awarded to cover travel and living expenses for three months.
  • ICO three-month Fellowship in Pathology, Oncology, and Microbiology - An amount of up to US $6,000 will be awarded to cover travel and living expenses for three months.
  • ICO-ECF Six-month Fellowships for Diagnosis and Therapy of Retinoblastoma- An amount of up to US $8,000 will be awarded to cover travel and living expenses for six months.
  • One-year ICO-Retina Research Foundation Helmerich Fellowships - An annual fellowship of US $25,000 to cover round trip travel, living expenses, health coverage, liability coverage and professional expenses.
  • ICO-Fred Hollows Foundation One-year Sub-specialty Fellowships - A total of two fellowships will be awarded of US $ 24,000 to cover round-trip travel, living expenses, and professional expenses.
