0x80070422 Error message When You Try to Enable Windows Firewall

When you try to enable your Windows Firewall in Internet Explorer 9, you receive the following error message:

0x80070422

To enable your Windows Firewall, try the methods in this article. If the first method doesn't resolve your issue, go to the next method.

If you haven't scanned your computer for viruses or malware recently, we strongly recommend that you do this. You can use the Microsoft Safety Scanner to remove malware from your computer. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Go to the following Microsoft website:

2. Click Download Now. Follow the on screen instructions to download and install the Microsoft Safety Scanner. When you are prompted, save the file to your desktop.

3. After installation, move to your desktop and double-click the Microsoft Safety Scanner icon. It may be listed as msert.

4. Check the Accept all terms of the preceding license agreement box, and then click Next two times. See image

5. Click Quick Scan, and then click Next. See image

6. The Microsoft Safety Scanner will scan your computer and remove all malware.

7. Click Start, and then type Windows Firewall in the Search programs and files box (Windows 7) or in the Start search box (Windows Vista).

8. Click Windows Firewall.

9. In the navigation pane (left pane) of Control Panel, click Turn Windows Firewall on or off. See image

10. Click Turn on Windows Firewall for each network location, and then click OK. See image.

If you still receive error 0x80070422 when you try to turn on your Windows Firewall, go to Method 2.

To fix this problem automatically, click the Fix-It image below. If a security notification appears, click Run.

If you still receive error 0x80070422 when you try to turn on your Windows Firewall, go to Method 3.

1. Click Start, and then type Windows Update in the Search programs and files box (Windows 7) or in the Start search box (Windows Vista).

2. Click Windows Update, and then click Check for updates.

3. Click Install Updates. You may have to restart your computer after installation.

4. Click Start, and then type Windows Update in the Search programs and files box (Windows 7) or in the Start search box (Windows Vista).

5. Click Windows Firewall.

6. In the navigation pane of Control Panel, click Turn Windows Firewall on or off.

7. Click Turn on Windows Firewall for each network location, and then click OK.

If you still receive error 0x80070422 when you try to turn on your Windows Firewall, go to Method 4.

1. Click Start, and then type Services in the Search programs and files box (Windows 7) or in the Start search box (Windows Vista).

2. Click Services (next to a cogwheel icon), and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted, enter your administrator user name and password, and then press Enter.

3. Scroll until you see Windows Firewall. Double-click Windows Firewall. See image



4. Click the drop-down list next to Startup type, and then click Automatic. See image



5. Restart your computer. Windows Firewall should be enabled.
